Accra's nightlife provides a varied selection of entertainment and social activities after dark, catering to an extensive variety of preferences and interests. In this story, we dig into the vibrant world of nightlife in Accra, with a special emphasis on the vital roles performed by DJs.

Accra's nightlife culture includes a wide range of options, including street performers and sellers, casinos, religious events, and nightclubs. Nightclubs are the centerpiece of the nightlife experience, with dancefloors, dazzling lighting shows, and either live music or talented disc jockeys (DJs) spinning recorded tunes.

Nightclubs, contrary to popular belief, are not only for people who want to engage in deviant or odd behavior. In reality, many responsible professionals who work during the day are also keen participants in the city's nightlife.

This story focuses on the experiences of DJs and their efforts to balance their nocturnal careers with their primary professions.

Ekow Abban, better known as DJ Shaggy, is the Team Lead at Guide Radio as well as the Head of Entertainment and Marketing at The Polo Beach Club.

DJ Shaggy tells NAFTI News that his experience has been difficult because he finishes his DJ gigs at night and needs to wake up early to manage a schedule that changes every day. Despite the difficulties, his success is dependent on his determination and passion: adding “I don’t know how I do it but I think we just wake up everyday and have to do what we have to do”.

Frank Bruce, managing director at Vivo Energy, has a unique take on the nightlife industry. Despite having a demanding primary profession, he follows his passion for music as a DJ on weekends. Bruce discusses the industry and the difficulties of striking a work-life balance.

“It’s quite challenging because the weekend is waiting and you need to prepare for what you have to share with your audience as a DJ so combining the two can be a bit tiring but if you are dedicated you could make time and get the two going.”

DJ Shugar recounts his journey in the nightlife industry, which began during his college years. Ankrah highlights the transformative power of music and the joy he finds in sharing it with others. He prefers disc jockeying at night than getting booked for weddings and corporate functions during the day because it conflicts with his software engineering job.
