GHANA TOPS GLOBAL LEAGUE TABLE WITH FEMALE PEACEKEEPERS

The Gender Policy Advisor (GPA) to the Chief of Defence Staff, Captain (Ghana Navy) Veronica Adzo Arhin has disclosed that Ghana is currently topping the global league table with the highest number female peacekeepers in the world.
She gave this revelation in an interview with NAFTI News at her office in Burma Camp, Accra on 25 May, 2023.
The Gender Policy Advisor mentioned that the success was achieved by the Military High Command together with her office. Adding that as part of her efforts to meet the United Nations (UN) threshold of contributing 20% of female troops to UN peace support operations by 2028. And the vision had urged her to put measures in place to ensure such mandate and vision is accomplished and  also to promote gender parity amongst workers of the Ghana Armed Forces.
Naval Captain Arhin further disclosed that Ghana among other peacekeepers across the world is the 9th largest Troop Contributing Country and 3rd in Africa with over two thousand seven hundred soldiers of which 15% are women serving on several missions globally.
Speaking on  Ghana's contribution to UN, she assured that the Ghana Armed Forces is working tirelessly to meet the United Nations Gender Parity target of 20% female participation in all peacekeeping centres  before 2028.

She further explained that the vision of the Military High Command was to enhance gender mainstreaming at all levels; and that had called for adequate training for the Engagement Platoons before deployed at the operational areas.
 The Engagement Platoon she said, encompasses an equal proportion of both men and women whose responsibilities are to ensure women and children went about their activities daily in the mission areas. She advised that combat roles should not be the preserves for only men.
  
  
In an interview with the Engagement Platoon Commander in Abyei, South Sudan, Captain Cecilia Erzuah described her award as a great achievement for the entire personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces. 
 The Best UN Gender Advocate for 2022 mentioned that the award underscores the tireless effort and dedication of the Engagement Platoon towards gender equity and inclusiveness while accomplishing UN's mandate in Abyei.

                  " Our engagement facilitated the confidence the locals people had in the Ghanaian Battalion in South Sudan. The number of women participation in their community protection committee, which was male dominated increased." She added.  She advised that gender equity is the mandate for all  and women if given the equal opportunity would perform satisfactorily than their male counterparts.
