STUDENT POLITICS

The involvement of students in politics is an issue which has sharply divided educational authorities and academics.

Student politics started from the secondary level to tertiary level where prefect and school leaders are elected to see to the welfare of  students. It is worth knowing that these students end up in national politics to become a member of Parliament or the President of Ghana.

Historically, campuses have been strategic locations for political parties to identify and groom prospective national office holders. TEIN is the student wing of the N.D.C which can boast of several young politicians including Tamale south M.P Haruna Iddrisu and North Tongu M.P Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwah. In an interview with the deputy Organizer, Elikem Kotoko, emphasized that students are intellectual properties and they are very important in national politics, since the majority of these students end up in mainstream politics and we rely on them as a political party, hence student politics is beneficial,  he narrated.

Just like the N.D.C the student wing of the N.P.P is TESCON which has also molded young politicians such as the N.L.A boss Samuel Awuku and deputy finance minister John Kumah. Willam Yamoah is an administrator for the ruling party the  N.P.P in a narration said, student politics serves as a breeding ground for future leaders and activists. Since they learn how to campaign and to manage  limited resources allocated to them as student leaders. This prepares them for future national leadership. Thus student politics is important in our democratic dispensation, he said.

Despite these success stories the presence of these parties on campuses is not a good move for many. Retired lecturer and political scientist Richard Amoako Baah said, such groups must be banned on campuses for poisoning the academic environment and introducing the students to political vices .

This is not a position these students politicians share

The S.R.C  President of Accra  Technical University, Damesi Etse says student involvement in politics for sponsorship and links  after school, should they leave school and also admitted that the existence of TEIN and TESCON is important on campuses since it prepares them for the future.

Adjei Prosper, the S.R.C Vice President of Africa University of Communication reiterated that students are the future leaders hence their involvement in politics is in the right direction, since one day they will be in charge of national affairs.

In conclusion, the quality of student leaders trained by the political parties will certainly reflect in how they perform when they are appointed into national positions in future, should their party either NDC or N.P.P is voted into power.
