These alternative healthcare solutions have gained popularity among individuals seeking natural approaches to address their health concerns. However, understanding the effectiveness of these herbal medicines and their potential risks is of paramount importance.

From moringa to neem trees, chamomile to hibiscus, and 'prekese' to other ancient remedies, these natural herbal medicines are widely used for various health purposes.

But what real benefits do these herbal medicines offer, and are there any unintended consequences?
Aunty Mansah (not her real name) shares her harrowing experience with NAFTI news after experiencing a near-death experience through the use of herbal medicine.
"I was battling cancer, and I was willing to try anything that could provide some improve my condition. I came across a herbal remedy being sold by a roadside vendor, and I thought it could potentially help. However, it turned out to be a disastrous choice. The herbal medicine not only failed to alleviate my symptoms but also had harmful effects on my body. I ended up in the hospital, and the doctor revealed that the herbal remedy was not only ineffective but also damaged my kidney. It was a devastating realization, and it further complicated my already challenging journey of fighting cancer".
Freda Tettey, a herbal medicine seller, promoting the use of natural remedies, claims that their products are derived from natural sources and are free from harmful side effects. In an interview with NAFTI News, she elaborates on the sourcing and preparation of herbal medicines, explaining how they carefully select natural ingredients and follow traditional practices to create their remedies.

Zelda Robertson, a Principal Nursing Officer at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, warns about the risks of consuming herbal medicines without proper guidance. She explains that "the absence of approved testing and recommended dosages can strain the liver and weaken its function. This can lead to liver conditions like hepatitis. Additionally, the kidneys face difficulties in filtering and excreting medication byproducts".
