The slogan 'Black Is Beautiful' was developed to affirm Black African heritage. In the 1960s and 1970s, this motto encouraged and inspired Africans to express their political commitments by adopting more traditionally African styles.
However, following technological advancements, having long straight hair has become more fashionable as many women seek to adhere to European beauty standards. They achieve this by wearing Brazilian hair extensions and Mexican Wig caps.

In recent decades, Afro Natural hair is making it presence known across the globe through fashion. Many say that, this trend results from the fear of the health implications, which they have learnt through education, of these modern chemical hair relaxers.
For some, the Afro- natural hair is all about returning to their African heritage, boosting their confidence and self esteem.

Abigail Sameal Buky, the CEO of Bukslay Saloon, has been into the hairstyling business for half a decade. She tells why majority of her clients maintain their Afro Natural Hair.
She stated that 'some of these hair relaxers have sodium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, which are all very strong chemicals. When introduced to hair, they eventually enter the body and can cause side effects such as blindness, skin irritation and infertility. For the fear of these health implications, many clients goes in for natural hair, they want to enjoy better health'.
