Citizen's unawareness of the MyNHIS app's existence is hindering its potential benefits for beneficiaries leading to inadequate healthcare access.

This lack of awareness is attributed to limited promotion, education, and awareness campaigns.

In 2003, Ghana reformed its healthcare access by introducing the National Health Insurance Scheme to replace the then cash and carry payment method. In 2014, the NHIA adopted a biometric registration to address the long queues at their centres, streamlining the process of registration and renewal of the policy, and improving efficiency.

On 5th December 2022, the National Health Insurance Authority introduced the MyNHIS app, a digital platform that will enable beneficiaries to renew the validity of their NHIS cards from the comfort of their homes and offices, with the use of their smart phones and internet connection.

With the MyNHIS app, users can register and renew the membership of a third party with their Ghana card. Despite the numerous advantages the MyNHIS app presents, the app's reliance on mobile phones and internet connectivity may exclude certain segments of the population, exacerbating existing health inequalities.
Shirley Sampson talks about her unawareness of the MY NHIS APP

Shirley Sampson, a worker at the La Dade-Kotopon Municipal health directorate expressed her unfamiliarity with the MyNHIS app. According to her, the aged population and illiteracy rate at that area will make the usage of the App difficult.  "I do not know much about the App, but I know about the USSD code. You can dial the USSD code, to find out when your card will expire and also do your renewal", she stated.

Winfred McCarthy, a beneficiary on the National Health Insurance Scheme shared his experience about the NHIS renewal process. "I have not heard about MyNHIS App, all I know is to go to the office or use the short code USSD *929#", he said.

Isaac Kwame Debrah is a graphic designer, who benefited greatly from the NHIS during illness. He maintained that the NHIA's digitalization idea is good, however it is to the disadvantage to non-smartphone users. "For me, the mobile money code is for all networks and all phones", he stated.

George Hammond, MIS Manager at Dansoman NHIA, attributes the invisibility of the MyNHIS App to the proximity of some beneficiaries.
